Overview of Huntington County Agriculture

Location and Geography: Huntington County is located in northeastern Indiana, west of Fort Wayne, with a landscape that features gently rolling farmland, woodlands, and sections of the Wabash River. Its geography supports a strong agricultural presence, with rich soils ideal for row crops and grain production.

Major Crops:

  1. Corn is widely grown in Huntington County, primarily for grain, livestock feed, and ethanol production.
  2. Soybeans thrive in the county’s fertile soils and are a key crop used in food processing and animal feed.
  3. Wheat is also cultivated in the area, serving both as a food crop and a useful rotational crop for soil health.

Huntington County, Indiana, is home to approximately 643 farms spread across nearly 220,000 acres, reflecting an 11% increase in farmland since 2017. Agriculture plays a key role in the local economy, with around 64% of farm activity focused on crops – mainly corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa – while the remaining 36% comes from livestock and related products. The county’s gently rolling terrain, nourished by the Wabash and Salamonie Rivers, provides ideal conditions for both row crops and pastureland. Huntington’s consistent ranking among the top third of Indiana counties for farm output highlights its strong agricultural base.

When it comes to the land market, available listings in Huntington County remain relatively limited. Currently, only a handful of farms and hobby farms are on the market, with typical parcel sizes ranging from 10 to 40 acres. This low supply, combined with steady demand, keeps buyer interest high, especially for quality farmland. While some properties may spend several months on the market, the area’s established agricultural productivity and rural appeal continue to drive interest from farmers, investors, and lifestyle buyers alike.
