Overall, the average price of farmland was $8,376/acre and the price per productivity index point was $80.48 in 2024 based on the sales data. It is important to note that in 2024 there have been farmland sales as high as $10,695 per acre.

The county ranks 54th in the state when it comes to the total amount of land currently on the market. Vandalia stands out as the area with the most farms, hunting land, and other rural properties available for sale. Fayette County is pretty sizable too, ranking as the 22nd largest county in Illinois with an area of 725 square miles, and it’s located right in the heart of Central Illinois.

 

 

The most recent USDA farmland census reveals that Fayette County, Illinois, encompasses 328,888 acres of farmland across 1,122 farms, with an average farm size of 293 acres. The county’s agricultural landscape is predominantly cropland, comprising 79% of the total land in farms, followed by woodland at 12%, pastureland at 5%, and other uses at 4%. The primary crops cultivate are soybeans and corn, with soybean acreage at 131,159 acres and corn for grain at 101,614 acres. Livestock production includes 22,959 hogs and pigs, 13,867 cattle and calves, 7,178 layers, and 1,467 sheep and lambs.
