Overview of Fulton County Agriculture
Location and Geography: Fulton County is located in northern Indiana, positioned roughly 70 miles northeast of Indianapolis. It covers about 371 square miles of predominantly flat terrain, with rich agricultural soils and a network of small rivers and creeks.
Major Crops:
- Corn: Fulton County’s crop landscape is dominated by corn. It is often planted on the vast majority of arable land.
- Soybeans: This is the county’s second major crop, frequently rotated with corn to maintain soil fertility and reduce pest issues. Farmers rely on them for oil, protein meal, and as a cash crop.
Fulton County remains a stronghold for traditional row-crop farming, with corn and soybeans comprising the overwhelming majority of the 368,390 acres of farmland reported in the 2022 USDA Census of Agriculture. Livestock operations add further resilience, representing roughly 26% of the county’s total agricultural market value, while conservation and disaster assistance programs from USDA bolster economic stability.
Fulton County’s rural land listings average about 33 acres per parcel. Statewide, Indiana farmland values are trending upward as of mid-2024. These elevated values are driven by robust commodity prices, constrained land availability, and interest from investors and developers – especially in areas near interstates or urban fringes. Fulton County’s market reflects these trends, where farmland retains strong value and attracts diverse buyers, including farmers, investors, and conservation-minded purchasers.
