Overview of LaPorte County Agriculture

Location and Geography: LaPorte County sits in northwestern Indiana, about a 50-mile drive east from Chicago, spanning approximately 613 square miles of mainly flat to gently rolling terrain with fertile soils.

Major Crops:

  1. Corn: Leads by acreage, with over 103,400 harvested acres dedicated to grain – a staple of the county’s cropland.
  2. Soybeans: Extensively grown, covering approximately 85,800 acres and serving as the second largest crop.
  3. Wheat: Including both winter and spring varieties, is planted on around 2,340 acres, supporting crop rotation practices.

LaPorte County’s agriculture is centered around a mix of corn and soybean production, with these two crops dominating most of the region’s fertile, gently rolling fields. On smaller scales, producers also raise wheat, oats, and forage crops—supporting local livestock operations and maintaining soil health through crop rotation.

In recent years, demand for farmland in the county has remained strong. Buyers are attracted by the county’s proximity to the Chicago‐region markets and reliable yields, which has kept interest steady among both local farmers looking to expand and investors seeking long‑term agricultural land assets.
